I had the opportunity to shoot Ernie Cline last month in Austin for the Guardian Weekend Magazine’s Experience column. I was excited to meet the writer of the script for the film Fanboys, but more excited to make some photos of his DeLorean. I spoke to Ernie prior to the shoot and scouted a location with a clean background. He suggested a nearby mall where he has taken his “ECTO88″ for late night spins and photo shoots. Shooting outside in Austin in July and August is asking a lot of a subject, but we managed despite one snafu… The car wouldn’t start. We tried to jump it with his other car and my truck, but nothing. So we shot some images in the garage, which was way hot, and then rolled the car into his driveway.Ernie has wanted the car since childhood and finally got the opportunity to buy it when he wrote his first novel “Ready Player One,” which he is writing a movie screenplay for presently.Despite the car not working and thus crushing our excitement about taking the car to a black top parking lot in the middle of a summer day, we had a great shoot!
